Investigator, Fire Fighter Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP)


Major Mike Richardson is an investigator in the Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP) at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Division of Safety Research. He is a 37-year veteran of the military and fire service and is retired Division Chief of Training & Safety for the St. Matthews Fire Department in Louisville, Kentucky. He has also served as a firefighter, company officer, and chief officer for departments in New York, Florida, and elsewhere in Kentucky.

Major Richardson has been involved with the fire service at a national level through instructing at fire conferences like the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) and Fire-Rescue International, authoring articles in publications like Fire Engineering and FIREHOUSE, and serving on the Board of Directors for the Fire Department Safety Officers Association (FDSOA) and the International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI). He has also served on the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) Electronic Safety Equipment and Fire Service Training Committees.

Major Richardson is a certified Incident Safety Officer (ISO) and a Health & Safety Officer (ISO) and was the 2021 recipient of the ISFSI Organizational Achievement Award. He received a BS in Fire & Safety Engineering and an MS in Loss Prevention & Safety, both from the Eastern Kentucky University Fire Science Program, where he was an Honors Graduate.
